    SMS Help

There's an SMS option in the config menu on my Reperion for Windows Mobile. Can anyone tell me what it does? Does it send my current coordinates to that? Anyone doing something cool with it, like updating twitter or plazes?

    Re: SMS Help

    Hi Dave,

The SMS box is to send your location via SMS instead of GPRS.

However, in the basic (free) version this is not supported, we don't provide the SMS-gateway service to basic subscribers. Sorry for that.

Could you tell us a little more about the sites you mentioned? Maybe we, reperion, can integrate with these services.

    Best regards.

    Re: SMS Help

    HI Mike,

Thanks for the response, you're really involved! Here's some information on the two sites that I mentioned and how people might use reperion to interact on other platforms.

www.plazes.com is another geo-based social networking site that shows people and their friends on maps and has widgets to then publish that info onto other sites. You can update it via SMS, and the format would be either just location or "text message @ location."

www.twitter.com is a tool that people use to share small streams of updates. it's partially an away message and partially a stream of updates for and from your buddies. you can update twitter from either SMS or Jabber, but it's best to have a decode the location to 'near or in x town'

there's another mapping tool that has twitter support through Jabber called www.mologogo.com that can navigate based on gps or through triangulation using cell towers. however their windows mobile client doesn't have jabber yet or any kml streams to publish across the web to other sites/ blogs.

    Re: SMS Help

To elaborate on the possible uses of Reperion to integrate with Plazes or Twitter...

Plazes is a map-based social networking site that asks where you are and what you're doing. So, if you craft an SMS to their sms number from the user's cell number including a message (like the messages on reperion) and a location, it will update the user's profile. However, you also have to use a geocoder to get the location, as coordinates aren't taken. The protocol for Plazes is 'message @ location' ie drinking beer in Washington DC.

Twitter is a general update feed, not specifically map based. It's very similar, but it just needs a txt or im to go to a particular address. This also requires crafting an sms from the user and geocoding the results... See Mologogo's Molotwit for the concept.

     Hope that Helps,

    Dave
